Dialectic — Follow the Argument. Question the Conclusion.
The digital experience2024 — Present

How Lucent Works is engineering Dialectic — an interactive argument-analysis workspace that transforms dense debate transcripts and video captions into navigable, non-linear argument graphs backed by strict quotation grounding and multi-dimensional epistemic scoring.

Behind the project

Beyond Rhetorical Noise: Transforming Long-Form Debate into Inspectable Logic.

Public debates, political discussions, and expert panels are dense with deflection, rhetorical framing, and cognitive overload. Audiences and analysts struggle to track who actually answered which objection, which claims were substantiated by verifiable evidence, and where the reasoning broke down.

Dialectic was conceived to replace passive video consumption with rigorous, interactive epistemic exploration. It takes unedited conversation transcripts and video captions and reconstructs them into an interactive, spatial argument graph where every assertion, premise, and counterargument can be inspected in context.

Lucent Works is architecting and developing Dialectic as a high-performance personal intelligence workspace. From brand identity and ergonomic UI design to deep graph visualization and multi-stage LLM orchestration, we are building a tool that helps users follow the argument and question the conclusion.

01

The Challenge: Preventing AI Hallucination and Taming Graph Entropy

Generic AI summarizers notoriously distort debate nuances: they fabricate non-existent quotes, smooth over genuine disagreements, or misattribute arguments to the wrong speaker. Meanwhile, rendering real debates with branching rebuttals, concessions, and joint-support junctions quickly becomes an unreadable tangle of visual chaos.

The engineering mandate demanded absolute citation integrity, sub-50ms local responsiveness, and an intuitive canvas capable of organizing up to 160 intricate argument nodes without freezing the browser.

  • Guaranteeing that every single extracted quotation is strictly grounded in exact, verifiable character offsets of the source transcript.
  • Architecting an automated ELK layout engine that automatically handles circular reasoning, shared evidence, and multi-premise junctions.
  • Eliminating model bias by evaluating exchanges across three orthogonal criteria: formal logic, evidence strength, and conversational responsiveness.
02

The Strategy: Epistemic Integrity, Dual-Model Pipelines, and Local-First Privacy

Rather than positioning AI as an opaque judge of truth, Dialectic treats it as a structured analytical assistant whose every output is inspectable by the user. Every card links directly to its source quote, timestamp, and speaker attribution.

We designed a multi-stage pipeline supporting both Google Gemini for rapid zero-cost extraction and OpenAI Responses for structured synthesis with on-demand web research. Everything is stored locally on the user’s machine in an atomic file database, ensuring full privacy and zero vendor lock-in.

  • Multi-pass extraction pipeline dividing speaker diarization, topic chunking, connection reconciliation, and exchange adjudication.
  • On-demand web research for individual factual claims with strict citation retention, downgrading ungrounded claims to unverified.
  • Local-first atomic persistence in .data/ protecting user notes, custom spatial arrangements, and review flags across sessions.

The Execution: React Flow, ELK.js, Node.js, and Strict Zod Schemas

We engineered the web client with React 19, TypeScript, and @xyflow/react, creating a fluid infinite canvas with custom argument cards, collapsible topic clusters, and responsive layout algorithms. Custom node types render logical relationships — support, challenge, qualification, and question — with distinct visual grammar.

The backend runs on Node.js and Express 5, implementing strict Zod schema validation across all pipeline stages. The server automatically rejects fabricated quotations before they can reach the UI, while a debounced, serialized workspace saver protects user canvas adjustments.

  • Integrated media caption ingest supporting YouTube, Vimeo, and TED via yt-dlp, alongside raw TXT, SRT, and VTT transcript uploads.
  • Sub-50ms canvas interaction latency with smooth hardware-accelerated zoom, pan, and branch collapse.
  • Dual provider flexibility allowing seamless toggling between Gemini 3.8 Flash and OpenAI gpt-4.1 with structured outputs.
100%Quote Grounding

Zero fabricated citations: every argument strictly maps to verbatim transcript offsets.

160Node Graph Capacity

Scales to deep multi-hour debates across complex multi-branch topics without cognitive overload.

3Scoring Dimensions

Separate objective evaluations for logical validity, empirical evidence, and conversational responsiveness.

<16msCanvas Frame Budget

Silky smooth 60 FPS panning, zooming, and node layout powered by React Flow and ELK.

A Radical New Medium for Discernment and Critical Thought.

Dialectic marks a fundamental shift from black-box AI chat towards inspectable visual intelligence. In private testing on high-stakes political and philosophical debates, the workspace exposes hidden concessions, unsubstantiated leaps of logic, and unanswered questions in seconds.

As development advances toward public release, Lucent Works continues refining advanced capabilities, including cross-debate topic federation, historical discourse mapping, and interactive collaborative analysis.

  • Spatial argument visualization that turns messy audio into clear, structured intellectual maps.
  • Zero-hallucination verification architecture anchored in verbatim source citations.
  • High-performance desktop tool built for researchers, journalists, and critical thinkers.
